  1. amazing. only if you’ve seen berlin today can you really appreciate the gap between the then and the now. eerily, it is still recognizable today. perhaps more so in “wings of desire” (wenders, 1987, i think). i’ve been thinking about writing a novel about fascism and those days for the longest time. my father was the age of this boy in 1945, running around among ruins just like that, i imagine, only months after the last direct attack by a fighter plane, when, after the allies ruled the air, they had leisure to hunt individuals down. time to re-read slaughterhouse 5 maybe. even though there are wars going on, we seem to live in more civilized times overall. thanks for sharing.
