Favorites from Criterion Collection… Last Year at Marienbad
A puzzle inside a puzzle inside a puzzle. A film of beauty. And fear. Totally engrossing. All about impossibilities, blendings, disorientation. Marvelous pacing. Very poem-like.
Last Year at Marienbad (1961), Alain Resnais, dir.

This film was given a great transfer by Criterion. Wonderful supplements.
X: “Empty salons. Corridors. Salons. Doors. Doors. Salons. Empty chairs, deep armchairs, thick carpets. Heavy hangings. Stairs, steps. Steps, one after the other. Glass objects, objects still intact, empty glasses. A glass that falls, three, two, one, zero. Glass partition, letters.”

One of my favorite films too!
Thank you for sharing the beautiful images and video link.
Love the plot twists, the scenery, the tense atmosphere, the music, Sacha Vierny’s fantastic cinematography, and that iconic manipulated image of the garden with the cone-shaped trees where the people don\’t cast any shadows.
Agree about the cinematography here, Berit. Marvelous work. Watching the film is both a tense and energetic experience – and I think the shifting rhythms of visual tone throughout create the tension. Stunning look. Strong film.
