Mary Ruefle, “Keeping It Simple” … #12
Mary Ruefle
“Keeping It Simple”
I take the bird on the woodpile,
separate it from its function, feather
by feather. I blow up its scale.
I make a whole life out of it:
everywhere I am, its sense of loitering
lights on my shoulder.
Very nice! I just read a bit in Poetry about Ruefle, in which she said that a poem is a “perceptual event.” This is a perfect illustration of that.
I like Ruefle’s definition. Glad you enjoyed the poem, Karen.
