Wong Kar-Wai’s In the Mood for Love …

li-zhen-and-chowAfter watching Wong Kar-Wai’s masterpiece – In the Mood for Love (2000) – I became convinced that cinematography was invented for his film. From a visual standpoint, it’s the most stunning use of the frame – start to finish – I’ve ever seen. A beautiful film, beautiful story… a story, in keeping with Kar-Wai’s method, that is spontaneous. Kar-Wai dislikes working from a finished script. In the Mood wasn’t the film Kar-Wai planned to make, but it certainly is the film he was born to make.

This film is easily in my short list – 10 favorite films. Remarkable acting, framing that is very close to perfection, and a mood-driven soundtrack. Each viewing is fresh.
